Under his leadership as Mayor of Chula Vista, McCann has prioritized public safety, expanding the police force and implementing innovative crime-reduction measures that have made Chula Vista one of the safest large cities in America. He has championed small businesses, streamlined government processes, and delivered critical infrastructure improvements to enhance the quality of life for working families.

The Honorable Mayor John McCann, a lifelong Chula Vista resident and the proud recipient of our Republican National Hispanic Assembly of San Diego endorsement, is running for San Diego County Supervisor District 1 in the 2025 election! With a decorated record as an Iraq War veteran, successful small-business owner, and dedicated public servant, McCann is a proven leader who has spent his life delivering real results for our communities.
Raised by a hardworking single mother who worked at the Rohr/Goodrich Aerospace Factory, McCann embodies the values of resilience, determination, and service. After graduating from Bonita Vista High School, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics and contributed his expertise to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
As Mayor of Chula Vista, McCann has championed public safety, moving the city into the Top 10 Safest Cities in the U.S. with a population over 200,000. Under his leadership, the police force has grown from fewer than 200 to over 260 officers, with innovations like body-worn cameras, a GPS dispatch system, the Drone System, and Live 911 to enhance transparency and response times. McCann also spearheaded the Homeless Outreach Team program to help people transition off the streets and into a better life.
McCann’s solution-driven leadership doesn’t stop there. He’s prioritized neighborhood improvements by expediting street repairs, park enhancements, and organizing clean-up efforts through programs like “I Love Chula Vista” and “Beautify Chula Vista.” He’s also tackled traffic congestion, improving signal coordination, enhancing pedestrian safety, and advocating for lower SR-125 tolls, improving life for countless working families.
As a small-business owner, McCann has worked tirelessly to make Chula Vista a business-friendly city by streamlining permitting processes and championing major projects like the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan and Millenia Master Plan, bringing high-paying professional jobs to the region.
Beyond his civilian contributions, McCann continues to serve as a full Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves, where he has earned commendations for his boots-on-the-ground service in Mosul, Iraq.
A dedicated community volunteer, McCann has served on the boards of the South Bay YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, AYSO youth soccer, and the Bonita Fest Committee. His leadership has earned him accolades like San Diego County’s Local Elected Official of the Year and recognition as one of the best South Bay elected officials by the Star News reader poll.

District 1 includes Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, and San Ysidro (City of San Diego), as well as unincorporated communities like Bonita, Otay Mesa, and the Tijuana River Valley. Its boundaries extend:
