Chula Vista, California — Thursday, September 25, 2025
In a shocking display of partisan hatred, three Democratic Chula Vista City Council members got up and left in protest at Tuesday’s meeting when Republican Mayor John McCann called for a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk and his loved ones. Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10th, 2025. Erika, the wife and now widow of Charlie Kirk are parents of two children, a son who turned 1 in May and a daughter who turned 3 in August.
Mayor McCann delivered a dignified and unifying tribute, telling the council and audience: “Charlie Kirk was a public figure who inspired many in the cause of free speech, civic engagement, and youth leadership. His tragic death shocked the nation. Whether people supported or opposed his views, one thing is clear: no one’s beliefs or opinions should ever warrant an assassination. His passing reminds us of life’s fragility and the importance of treating one another with dignity. Tonight, we adjourn this meeting in his memory and extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.”
Rather than showing basic human decency for a murder victim, Deputy Mayor Carolina Chavez and Councilwoman for District 1, Councilman Michael Inzunza (District 3), and Councilman Cesar Fernandez (District 4) chose to make a political statement by walking out in protest. Their shameful behavior demonstrated the very intolerance and divisiveness that has poisoned American politics.
The dramatic walkout exposed the radical left’s inability to show even minimal respect for political opponents, even in death. Mayor McCann, who stands as the lone Republican voice on the council, maintained his composure despite the unprecedented disrespect from his Democratic colleagues.
While Councilman Jose Preciado (District 2) remained in the chamber, the September 24th incident has become a stark reminder of how far the left will go to silence conservative voices—even refusing to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for their beliefs of free speech, religion, and political opinions.
The controversy highlights the urgent need for Americans to reject the politics of hatred and division that the radical left continues to embrace.
